Newcastle United tried to sign Nicolai Jorgensen in January but would not pay Feyenoord's asking price
Newcastle United sbobet168 have been warned by Feyenoord that Nicolai Jorgensen’s price tag remains unchanged - meaning the Magpies will need to spend north of £20million in order to sign the Dane this summer.
Rafa Benitez has made acquiring a proven top-flight forward his priority this summer, though the Newcastle manager is working within a limited budget.
The Spaniard expects to be given a similar kitty to last summer - when United had a net spend of £46m - and he then hopes to recoup more than £30m from potential player sales to reinvest in his squad.
If the Magpies are going to lure a proven striker from one of Europe’s top leagues to Tyneside this summer, then they will almost certainly need to break their 13-year-old transfer record, which is the £16m they paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen during the summer of 2005.
The Magpies showed a willingness to surpass that figure in January - it is understood they offered at least that figure for Jorgensen - but Newcastle were unwilling to meet Feyenoord’s £20m valuation, despite Benitez being eager to sign the Denmark international.
Five months on and a striker remains top of Benitez’s wanted list, though Jorgensen is just one of a number of targets the Magpies are monitoring this summer.
Despite Jorgensen having gone three-and-a-half months without scoring for Feyenoord following Newcastle’s bid in January, the Eredivisie outfit still believe the 27-year-old is worth more than £20m.
Jorgensen started Denmark’s 1-0 victory over Peru in their World Cup opener on Saturday and, despite the striker failing to score, the Dutch club believe his value will increase if he does find the back of the net in Russia. sbobet168 Newcastle hope the same is true of Aleksandar Mitrovic, who missed two golden opportunities during Serbia’s 1-0 win against Costa Rica on Saturday, but still has two further group-stage matches to net in front of a global audience.
Sources in the Netherlands suggest Feyenoord will demand a fee of €25m (£21.9m) for Jorgensen this summer, and have made it clear to Newcastle they will only re-enter into serious negotiations once they are convinced United are serious about at least coming close to matching their asking price.
This offers another reality check to the Newcastle hierarchy; the Magpies have not broken their transfer record once since Mike Ashley bought the club 11 years ago, but it now appears almost inevitable United will need to do so if they want to sign a proven European striker on a permanent basis this summer.
Over the weekend, Hoffenheim also made it clear that they will only consider selling another of Newcastle’s forward targets - Andrej Kramaric - once they sbobet168 receive offers in excess of £40m.
